Cow Management and Development

Sheron Farm cows are run in mobs aligned to their birth year. The cows and their calves run in the hills of our Benger farm and are 100% grass fed, supplemented by hay and silage from our property during summer and autumn. It is important to have mobs of cattle in groups to ensure that Breedplan EBV’s (Estimated Breeding Values) are as accurate as possible.

Sheron Farm females are culled according to the following criteria:

  • Must have a good temperament
  • Must calve every 12 months in line with the joining period
  • Must have a live calf unassisted
  • Must be structurally sound and have excellent feet
  • Must maintain condition all season, &
  • Must have EBV’s which will increase profitability

At birth, all calves are tagged with NILS and Stud tags and weighed. They are weighed at weaning (5 months), and again at 400 days and 600 days when they are also DNA tested, parent verified, and ultrasound scanned for marbling, fat cover and eye muscle area.

Cows are weighed at weaning with the data processed for the Mature Cow Weight EBV.

Cow herd mating data is also recorded to Breedplan.
